Convergence!
What happens when you mix paint and textiles? Religion and pop culture? Rebellion and liberty? The exhibition Convergence highlighted the works of artists who are boldly exploring these themes and more. Beyond the strength of the storytelling of these pieces, the curators of the exhibition also placed an emphasis on classical visual beauty at a time when contemporary society chooses to define beauty in harsh and brutish tones.
Thanks to everyone who joined us in this celebration of perspective.

In most cultures, passing on traditional knowledge
In most cultures, passing on traditional knowledge is essential to the cultures survival. This is most true for nomads who, despite the many changes in the world, are largely able to maintain their on-the-go lifestyle. The knowledge passed down through generations is important in maintaining travel and trade routes deep in the desert, and maintaining stability among tribes.
This is the last of my photo series, which I hope you've enjoyed. Let's see when the road takes us next. - Ugo

Ancient and tribal art has particularly significance in religion. Unlike popular belief, masks are not idol's themselves but rather representations, gateways or token to the spiritual world.
The previous 3 posts have explored ancient and tribal art by displaying (and often juxtaposing) a selection of piece from a museum in Geneva. This selection focused on masks which are a subset of ancient and tribal art. As a branch of art, there is a much broader scope to this, even within the mask category.

Tribal art often refers to the works of indigenous people and has also been referred to as "non-western" or "primitive" art. The term primitive is of course controversial for its meaning. Tribal art from the African continent was historically an integral part of early cultures and traditions. Usually featured in masks and ceremonial pieces, Tribal art played a functional role in everyday life. Masks were designed to be worn on various parts of the body, not only the head/face but also on the arm or at the hip. Other masks were designed as part of more elaborate outfits (masquerades) featuring materials like straw, twine, bark-cloth, furs, shells etc.
